Whirikoka Yr 5&6 Dance Workshop 14-05

Today the Year 5&6's had a dance workshop with Lucy from The Royal NZ Ballet.  First we warmed up and then worked on the opening sequence.  Just before lunch we shared what we created and then went for a walk to the Botanical Gardens.  After lunch we worked on the final sequence and nearly timed it with the music :-).  It was a full on day but a lot of fun!  We really got cracking and choreographed about half of our dance!  Whew!
The process we followed to choreograph was:
  1. Look at vocabulary describing our scene/characters/feelings.
  2. Turn those words into moves.
  3. Create 8 count phrases from the moves.
  4. Layer entries/exits/freezes and unisons into the mix.
Don't forget Levels, facials and gestures and you have a great movement sequence!

Ka Pai everyone!  Now we just have to remember it and practice it, create costumes/props and we're done....  (not a big ask really is it!)

Looking forward to our Sunday practices starting this week!

Thanks Lucy!  You are awesome :-)

Here is a snippet of our work today.  I didn't video the rest of it but will do on Sunday!

  6. I had a lot of fun doing the dance with Lucy. My struggle was in the dance i have start off the spin and it is hard to remember. Being the river creatures was fun. I wonder what the taniwha (Me Harry and Tom) is going to do in the sense of the story.

  13. I loved how she taught us how to dance properly and use our whole body and big actions so the audience would see our actions and she flew down from wellington just to see us.

  14. we had a very fun time with lucy, i was a sun it was really fun and i am meant to be firey and boiling because sun isn't cold. as i am featured in quite a few scene's i don't know all of my positions quite yet. but my favorite is the starting bit the gets called on and then spirals in and the dose fiery poses.

  16. It was amazing with lucy I had sooooo much fun my favorite dance move is properly the grape vine because that was one of our warm ups and we played a game called musical statues and it was so fun because you can't get out no matter what and then we got into groups and made up a creative dance using but we had to relate it to rainbow, rain, mist and sun and the actions were look, play, leap, and roll thank you soooo much lucy for coming down just for us.

  17. I was really lucky to be working with Lucy alot. She has such good silks and a very open imagination for making up dances. She set us some challenges, one was to make up 8 dance moves that relate to the 8 words she gave us they were, sun, rain, rainbow, mist, look, leap, skip and play. We also needed to put them together and make a sequence of the moves. We agreed on some hand movements to do in the first scene. The movements were in a pattern. Thank you so much Lucy.

I liked our little warm up that we did to start our day it got my heart beating fast. the river creatures and the moon went and did there dances with mrs hall and the water, sun, and sea creatures stayed with Lucy, we all got in groups of four and had eight different things to show in our groups of four. The eight things we had to show were mist, rainbow, sun, rain, look, leap, jump and play. After morning tea we got into the same groups and did some other dances.
