Another successful MAPS workshop - Caring for rejected lambs...

Today we learnt how to care for a rejected lamb. This happens soon after birth where the mother doesn't bond with the baby for some reason.  There were some excellent tips from Kaycee on what to do when you find the lamb and how to care for it in the weeks after.

Kaycee advised - this is not for the faint hearted!  It takes a lot of work as you need to sit with it for a long time and feed it at least 3 times a day!  Commitment is what is needed here!

Joey was very well behaved during the workshop and everyone adored him!  After his feed we even got to see him poop!  Watch out rugby players!

Ka Pai MAPS workshop team!  Another well received, successful workshop!  I wonder what animal we will learn about next?

What workshops would you like?

MAPS workshop: How to groom a long haired cat!

Makaraka Animal Protection Shelter held it's inaugural workshop training today.  Responsible shelter volunteers and experts learnt hot to run a workshop, the knowledge and skills that come from workshops as well as taking away information on how to groom a long haired cat.

Everyone participated well and asked great questions.  The cat experts: Bella, Kaycee, Eden and Zion agreed that the workshop went well and they were happy with the level of understanding that the group had.

A fake cat was used in order to conduct the training as a real cat could possibly not cope well with the numbers present.  This will be followed up with a video with a real cat.  We all look forward to that.

Here is a short clip of today's workshop:

Tomorrow we follow this success with a workshop on how to care for a rejected lamb.  Wow it's all happening here at MAPS!

Abandoned - the story of the found puppies...

In the early morning dawn I ran along the dunes of the beach.  I do this most mornings.  This morning vaguely made out a mewling sound in the long grass.  Rustling in the breeze was a plastic rubbish sack.  Cautiously I walked over to the sack.  As I approached I could see movement inside it.  Weak movement.  Slight bumps pushing out of the plastic in many directions.  Soft cries came from within the sack almost sounding weaker and weaker.

Carefully I opened the sack pulling the cords apart.  Oh no, not again.  Anger coursed through me in waves!

Who did this? Why? How can we stop this?

Never fear Tawhirimatea's new mission is to help with this problem! Check out our blogs for the rest of the story.

How to check my reading marks in readworks...

Here is an example of how to see your answers and Mrs Hall's feedback.  This will tell you what to work on next when you do your next assignment!  Of course you will also be able to fix up your answers and make them better too!

Next video I will show you how to create your own library and choose your own stories!  Happy holidays and keep reading!

Values Work

In Week 1 we started looking at our school Values.  We really thought hard about how we learn at Makaraka, what we learn and how we should be as people.  This is an ongoing focus for this year as we take on leadership as seniors at Makaraka School.

Here is a short clip of some of the drama we did to help us feel what learning is like across many areas!

In groups we then used a strength card to look at how we can choose to be certain ways.  What does it feel like to be the "un" version of this?  Why would we choose the "un" version?  What makes people be in the "un" frame of mind?

Here is an example of one group's learning about being yourself!

Lord Nelson Visits Makaraka

Tawhirimatea loved having Lord Nelson in class today!  He is a special dog who belongs to Sam.  Sam is working on a project where he and Charlie are making a movie to show how pets can enhance your happiness and help you through your life.

Nelson loved our class and certainly visited all the students in the school.  He is a very well trained dog and even had a shower before he came in!

We can't wait to see Sam and Charlie's movie and the response they get from others about the happiness animals bring.  To quote Sam:  "Nelson cheers me up!  He is always there for me and I love how he plays!"
