Tuakana Teina and Mapping

Today our senior learners buddied up with the juniors and videoed them talking about their maps.  They then filled in the data on the form for the class teacher to analyse!  What a great bunch of students!  

They were so positive with comments coming out of them like:

"Wow they are so great at talking about their learning!" 

"You know how to make your learning better!"

"I really like how you have included all the parts on your map!' 

Tino Pai Rawa atu Tawhirimatea!  You are such a supportive group of rangatahi!  We are growing young leaders! 

Which value will you improve on for the first term?

Today we started thinking about our school values and which areas we might need to grow to enhance our learning.  

You will recognise these values and the criteria from our school report back page.  We  believe that learners should be able to understand these dispositions and actively work to get better at them.  

So today we made freeze frames about these values and discussed what we would see or not see for each one so we could understand them better and prioritise which values are important for us to progress our learning!  Have a look and see if you can recognise any dispositions in these photos!

Learning Map 1 Curriculum Evening

Last Tuesday we were lucky to have Mary Wootton visit and lead our curriculum evening.  

Great to see our student teachers involved too! 

We even got a sausage for dinner! 

Mary introduced our community to what we are doing in school with learning maps.  It was great to see so many people sharing the learning process with their children!

From now we do some learning and reflecting to see if we can make the changes that will help our learning.  Today we reflected on our change after 4 weeks and tweaked it for the remainder of the term!  

Outcome: We are getting better at our learning behaviours! 

What are learning maps?

On Thursday and Friday we drew and analysed our learning maps.  This is our first one for 2020.  What is a learning map I hear you ask... 

Learning Maps are a tool that supports children to be active and connected in their learning.  The children draw their current learning situation and then look at their map, talk to others and decide on a change they would like to make to help with their reading, writing and maths.

Every map is a 'right' map as it is drawn from individual perspectives.  The change priority that is decided on comes from what the learner feels needs to happen with the help of the teacher and their families.  Students may choose to share their maps with parents at home as they are all digital in a slide presentation.  They may also put them on blogs if they wish. 

From here we will be trying to make that change happen for the learners by reflecting each week and focussing on trends across our class that are common to everyone.  After a month we may reflect on our change priority and then revise, alter it or come up with a new one. 

In New Zealand in our curriculum has the vision that "young people will be confident, actively-involved lifelong learners."  Learning maps will take a large role in building the capability of children to be able to talk and make decisions about their learning!
